Lutka PINK ( 1906 – 1998)

Lutka Pink was born in Warsaw of devoted Jewish parents. Her love of art surfaced from the early age of three when she began contentedly producing drawings and paintings of her own.

Her formal studies began when she entered the Academy of fine Arts in Warsaw. Lutka’s talent was soon recognized and she was offered a travelling scholarship by the Polish Government. Her loving, supportive father gave her his blessing to answer the call of her muses. She joyfully set off for Paris taking with her, her love for her family, their way of life, their dongs and their music. But, her joy was short-lived.

World War II broke out soon after she left Poland and she was never to see her family again. As Lutka used to say: ”I have always been one step ahead of danger – my angel has always taken care of me – he has helped me to survive.”

And survive she did. One can only imagine the struggles and difficulties of a young Jewish girl in Paris at those unsettling times. But Fate was good to her for soon after her arrival, Lutka met with the great artist Vuillard who accepted her as his youngest student and who later obtained a French state scholarship for his prodigy. After the war ended, Lutka was commissioned to paint a mural at the American hospital, Mt. Sinai, in Aix en provence. It was shortly after this that Lutka met Picasso, who became a life-long friend. He introduced her to Chagall, Braque, Matisse and max Ernst. Thus Lutka became an integral part of the Parisian art world of the early 1950’s.

One of the most outstanding art critics of the times, Pierre Restany, called Lutka Pink the “second best artist in Paris”. Since then, both artists and critics have agreed with Restany as is evidenced by the following excerpts.
